Summer Preview Meeting This Sunday (1/29)!: All families of 7th - 12th graders are invited this Sunday from 6:00 - 7:30 in the CLLC as our weekly UMYF meeting is transformed into our Summer Preview. Bring your summer calendar and get ready to learn about Revolution, Rafting, Salkehatchie, Hiking, and more! Parents and siblings are encouraged to attend, and dinner will be provided.

Sunday School! If you haven't been coming to Sunday School, make the decision to come THIS SUNDAY! The 8th/9th grade class has welcomed a new teaching team of Tim Ristau and Trish Harlan. And this week, the 10th-12th grade class will start a new study called "Sticky Faith". This awesome study addresses why many people leave the church after high school. Learn how to make the faith you have now STICK after you graduate. Both classes begin at 9:15am in the CLLC.

Revolution 2012: Details about our trip to Revolution, the state-wide youth event, are now available on the bulletin board beside the copy room. Make plans to come along, March 16 - 18 in Columbia. Cost per person is $145 and gets you access to this incredible, faith-strengthening, life-changing weekend. Register today!

Hibben Parenting Panel: Parents! Mark your calendar for Sunday, March 4 from noon - 2pm for a new event aimed at encouraging you as you walk the winding (and sometimes rocky!) road of parenting. Join us for a presentation from a panel of veteran parents and school administrators while your children participate in special activities. Lunch will be served and more details will follow in the coming weeks. Come and be encouraged!

We will be sending groups toSpartanburg (June 16-23) and Lexington County (July 7-14), or you can chooseany camp that works with your summer schedule. We will be carpooling (or taking the church bus!) as in years past. Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed Christmas and New Year's with your family and friends and are getting settled back into your normal routines. For some of you, this is your last semester of high school! Others of you have a little longer to go...whatever your situation, hang in there!

UMYF this Sunday: Join in the fun from 6-8pm this Sunday (1/8) for our first UMYF meeting of 2012. We'll have dinner, enjoy some "free play" time, and then start the New Year off right...by covering it in prayer! Come experience 6 prayer stations that will give you a fresh perspective about what it means to talk and listen to God.

Dinner Needed! Parents, we are in need of a family (or 2, if you want to split the task with another family) to provide dinner THIS SUNDAY (1/8). A meal is needed for 20 people, served at 6pm. REVOLUTION RETURNS! Mark your calendars for March 16 - 18...we're headed to Columbia for Revolution, the state-wide youth event. This year's event promises to be bigger and better than ever before. There's a new venue (the Colonial Life Arena), a great line-up of bands, and a speaker (Jennifer Dake) who will inspire, challenge, and stretch your faith. More details will be coming soon. Come at 4:30pm for pizza on the front lawn, and bring your plate of goodies with you! We're hosting cookies and hot chocolate for our church family after the parade, in the CLLC. UMYF Christmas Party: We'll be celebrating Christmas together on December 18 from 6-8pm in the CLLC. Please bring your favorite snack to share (snack supper!). Then, we'll divide into teams and head out on the town for a scavenger hunt in Mt. Pleasant. It is going to be a BLAST - I promise you've never done a scavenger hunt like this before!

Calendar note: We will not have UMYF on December 25 (Merry Christmas!) or January 1 (Happy New Year!). Also, there will be NO Sunday School on 12/25.

UMYF this Sunday (12/4): Can you name even one thing that you LOVE to wait for? It's tough to think of something! This Sunday from 6-8pm, we'll test your ability to wait and talk about how to EMBRACE THE WAIT of this Advent season. All 7th - 12th graders are invited.

December schedule: Hopefully you received this info via e-mail from me earlier this week. If not, I need your e-mail address! Check out these December events:

December 11: It's the Mt. Pleasant Christmas Parade! Family Ministries is hosting Hibben's annual pre-parade pizza party, beginning at 4pm. EVERYONE IS INVITED to enjoy pizza, so bring your families. Stick around for cookies and hot chocolate after the parade!
December 18: UMYF Christmas Party, 6-8pm. Bring your favorite snack to share with the group! We'll have a snack supper before celebrating with a Christmas-themed scavenger hunt around town.
December 25: No UMYF, Merry Christmas! (Please note: there will be NO SUNDAY SCHOOL on 12/25.)
January 1: Your feedback is needed! Will you be in town on January 1? Do you want to have UMYF that night? E-mail me and let me know!

2012 Ski Trip: If you have registered for the ski trip, the deadline for your second and final payment of $130 is December 11. If you have not registered but would like to attend, we have ONE SPACE available. Cost of the trip is $265 and the dates are January 13 - 16.

Happy Thursday, everyone! We've got a busy weekend ahead here at Hibben...

Youth Sunday is this Sunday (11/13). The youth will be leading worship at both the 8:15 and 10:30 services and honoring Hibben's veterans for Veterans Day. If you have an active part in leading worship, please be in the Narthex at 7:50am SHARP. All youth are encouraged to be there at both services. DOUGHNUTS will be served during Sunday School hour. Please bring any veteran profile pages that need to be posted on display boards.

DINNER NEEDED: We are in need of dinner for UMYF this Sunday (11/13). Can your family help? We need food for 20 people to be served at 6:15pm. Please call Elizabeth if you can help - 813-8700 or e-mail her at econnell@hibbenumc.org.

UMYF this Sunday (11/13): We will meet from 6-8pm in the CLLC for dinner (hopefully!), games, and a lesson on what it means to GLOW despite the negativity that sometimes surrounds us. You won't want to miss this lesson, which contains a science experiment with Mountain Dew.

Christmas Eve Handbells: Contact Elizabeth if you're interested in playing in a youth handbell choir on Christmas Eve at 5:30. There will be 4-5 practices in November and December. This is a great opportunity to use your gifts to serve the church (and it's really fun, too!).

GOOD LUCK to the Wando Band, who are traveling to Indiana for Grand Nationals this weekend. We're thinking of you all and praying for safe travels and a memorable trip!

Life is busy, the demands that others place on us are sometimes overwhelming, and it seems there are never enough hours in the day. I invite you to come to a place of rest this Sunday...church! Gather with your church family on Sunday morning for Sunday School and worship, and make plans to be rejuvenated at the youth rally on Sunday night (11/6). It promises to be a night of great worship music, a thought-provoking message, and a special time to set aside the worries of the world and be reminded of the goodness of God.

This week's announcements include:

Hibben's Hosting! PLEASE make plans to attend youth THIS SUNDAY. We'll be hosting the District Youth Rally (for the first time in at least 3 years!), and I need your help to be a friendly, welcoming face to other Charleston youth groups. We'll need help starting at 4pm for dinner prep and set-up. The event is from 5-7pm in the CLLC.

Ski Trip Deadline: The deadline to register for the 2012 Ski Trip (January 13 - 16 at Winterplace) has passed, but there are still TWO SPACES open for the trip. A deposit of $135 and a registration form are required to hold your space. If you need fundraising help, please let Elizabeth know (econnell@hibbenumc.org) - we've got lots of easy opportunities coming up to help raise money for your trip fees. It's time to commit!!!

Youth Sunday: If you aren't coming to Sunday School, you're missing the chance to help plan Youth Sunday, scheduled for November 13. We're going to honor our veterans and we need your help! Join in the planning at 9:15 on Sunday mornings in the youth room.

I started this post trying to list announcements in order of importance, until I realized that they're ALL timely and important! Please read this information carefully so you can be fully involved in all the events and activities coming up:

UMYF Sunday (10/30): We'll meet in the CLLC from 6-8pm for our regularly scheduled program. This time, we'll have a costume contest (no need to dress up before you come...unless you want to...I'll have plenty of props ready!) and talk about how to spot bad things that are disguised as good things. Learn how to avoid the tricks while getting all God's treats!

Betty Boaz Update: I hope you received my e-mail yesterday that Ms. Betty is in need of our prayers. She is in ICU at East Cooper after being admitted with pneumonia two weeks ago. Please pray for her strength, for her doctors, and her family. She is currently on a ventilator and unresponsive. I will pass along updates as I receive them.

UMYF Sunday: We will have UMYF this Sunday from 6-8pm in the CLLC. Come ready for dinner, games, and some new knowledge. See you there!

Get Lost! No really...get lost at the Boone Hall Corn Maze! We'll be taking a trip there on Sunday, October 23. We'll eat lunch in the CLLC at noon and then head out for some fall fun! We'll return to the church at 4pm. Cost is $10 per person.

More information can be found on the Ski Trip bulletin boards, located at The Well service and on the bulletin board outside the sanctuary, near the copy room. A non-refundable deposit of $135 per person is due by November 1. Wow. It's been almost a week since last Sunday's SURPRISE wedding shower, and I still can't quite get over it. Did that really happen? Yes, apparently so. There are photos to prove it!

Thank you to everyone who had anything to do with the shower. Jeremy and I are so thankful for you and so humbled and appreciative for the outpouring of love that you showed us. It is so fun to be part of a group that shares sorrows and celebrates JOY. Thank you for the food, the games, the generous gifts, and most of all for keeping the secret a secret. It's a night we'll never forget.

The surprise begins. I think this is the point when I said, 'it smells like church.' I was right!

Here I am, quietly grilling Jeremy on how in the world all these details came together without me having any idea. I love this picture, and the expressions on both our faces. Good one, Jesse.

Here's the proudest moment of Jeremy's life. He's now the owner of TWO toilet brushes. I'm keeping a close eye on them to make sure they don't "mysteriously" disappear.

Charleston District Youth Rally: Mark your calendar for September 11 at 4:30pm. That's when we'll depart Hibben for the first District Youth Rally of the school year. We'll join other MYF groups from the area for a night of dinner, games, and a message at John Wesley UMC. We'll return to Hibben at 7:30pm. Don't miss this fun outing!

As expected, the James Island Challenge Course was AWESOME! Thanks to those of you who were able to come, and to the rest of you who prayed I wouldn't lose my lunch while hanging 2 stories in the air from a rope.

It was a great afternoon of team building, name learning, fear conquering, and adrenaline rushes! Here are some pictures...enjoy!

FALL KICK-OFF!!!!

Join us as we conquer the Challenge Course at James Island County Park this Sunday (8/14). It's the Fall Kick-off of UMYF, and we'll welcome rising 7th graders to the group. YOU MUST SIGN-UP to participate in this outing. At the time of this post, there were only 8 spaces remaining. If you wish to register, call Elizabeth at 813-8700.

The Plan: We'll meet in the CLLC after worship on Sunday morning (approximately 11:45) to have lunch. We'll leave for the ropes courses after lunch and return to the CLLC at 5:45pm. Please bring a change of clothes, and close-toed athletic shoes. Cost per person is $15.00.

Hello everyone! This is the first H.Y.P.E.R. update in a few weeks, and I trust you're all enjoying your summer vacations. Take a look at all the information and announcements below, and be sure to check out the photos in the next post, too!

UMYF schedule: We will not be having UMYF this Sunday (7/3) due to the holiday weekend, but we will meet on Sunday, July 10 from 6-8pm in the CLLC. See you then!

Youth Sunday School: We're well into our summer of service projects, and we'll continue this Sunday with planning recognition for Hibben's military personnel. Other summer projects will include a visit with Ms. Jackie Denman, a beach sweep, and the painting of our classroom in the CLLC. STARTING THIS WEEK, please bring an offering of at least $3.00 each week to support our service project efforts. Support these projects with your prayers, presence, gifts, and service! We'll meet in the classroom across from the restrooms in the CLLC.

Lexington and Bamburg Salkehatchie: Keep these folks in your prayers as they prepare for Salkehatchie. They'll leave July 9 and return the 16th: Devin Donaldson, Donny Roberts, Tyler Collins, Gina Fennell, Grace Fennell, Lyndsey Schaefer, Christian Schaefer, Jared Wells, Robert Hokum, Megan Yaeger, Jordan Yaeger, and Liz McIntosh.

Wilderness Trail space open: A space has become available for a FEMALE on our upcoming hiking trip with Wilderness Trail. (sorry, guys!). The trip is July 28 - August 4 and costs $270.00. For more info, visit www.wtrail.com or call me (884-9761). It's going to be a great trip!

Youth Sunday date set: Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 13, 2011. It's Youth Sunday at Hibben and we'll be in charge of leading the 8:15 and 10:30 worship services. Planning will happen during Sunday School in the fall. Make plans now to be part of this special day!

Pancake Breakfast for Alabama: The Alabama mission team is planning a pancake breakfast fundraiser for Sunday, July 17 from 7:30 - 9:30am. Make plans to come hungry and support this effort!

Congrats! It's official...the Class of 2011 took the stage this week and they're officially high school graduates. We are so proud of each one of you!

Youth Sunday School: All rising 7th - 12th graders should gather in the classroom across from the restrooms in the CLLC on Sunday morning at 9:15. We're embarking on a summer of "get off the couch" mission and service projects. You'll get to choose what you'd like to work on. Don't miss it! Recent graduates, you are welcome to join us OR promote yourself to the Young Adult class, which meets at Mozzo's Deli (near Starbucks) starting at 9:15.

Help me! I'm in need of a few volunteers on Wednesday, June 8 from 10am - noon to help with some VBS prep. Projects include banner making, sign hanging, name-tag cutting, and more. If you're able to help, please let me know!

UMYF Sunday (6/5): All 7th - 12th graders are invited...6-8pm in the CLLC. Join us for dinner, games, and a lesson - all without using your thumbs (yes, there's a point, I promise). See you there! Please note, we won't have UMYF on 6/12 due to VBS.

WINGS choir visit: If you're a Lexington Salkehatchie veteran, you know Ms. Donna and her group from St. Mark's in Seneca, SC. Good news! Hibben is one of many stops on their summer choir tour this year. We'll be hosting them on Thursday, June 16 at 7pm as they present the musical/drama "Waiters." Please make plans to attend to support your Salkehatchie friends! Invite friends and family and help me spread the word!

Riverdogs Game! Make plans now to join us at the Riverdogs game on Sunday, June 26. We'll depart Hibben at 4:15 for the 5:05pm game and will return by 8pm. We had a GREAT time rafting over Memorial Day weekend on the Pigeon and Nantahala Rivers. The weather was amazing, the water wasn't too cold, and Lake Junaluska was a great "home base" during our trip. Want proof? Check out these pictures!

Don't miss Sundae Sunday, happening THIS SUNDAY (5/8) from 6-8pm in the CLLC. We'll start with dinner and games before we construct a 10 FOOT ice cream sundae and pig out! While we may not break the world's record for longest sundae (the record is 150 feet!), we will have fun and relieve some end-of-the-school-year stress. Don't miss it!

Sunday School this week: 8th graders, be sure to catch week two of "teens vs. parents", being led by Kent and Cyrene Selby. This is a great study and will give you some hints about how to keep the peace at home. Sr. Highers, we're taking the show on the road Sunday morning. UMYF this Sunday (4/24): We will not have UMYF this Sunday. Enjoy Easter with your families!

Youth Rally: Make plans now to attend the Charleston District Youth Rally on Sunday, May 1 at Asbury/St. James UMC downtown. We'll leave Hibben at 4:30 and return at 7:30pm. Don't miss this night of food, games, and worship with other youth groups!

Vacation Bible School: I need youth helpers during VBS this year (June 12 - 15)! This is a great chance for you to serve the kids of Hibben and lend a helping hand...to me! Youth who volunteer will work as "team leaders", building relationships with the kids and participating with them at station activities. The younger kids look up to you all so much and would LOVE to be able to hang with you during VBS. Attention parents! If you haven't yet participated in a Serving From The Heart study to discover your spiritual gifts, a new class is starting on May 1. Lock-in 2011 happens TOMORROW (Friday, April 8) starting at 6pm until 7am Saturday. We've got food, basketball, fly swatter hockey, laser tag, ping pong, fooze ball, flower pot painting, Easter egg stuffing, board games, movies, video games, and more, more, more!

If you're in 7th or 8th grade, bring 2, 2 liters of soda.
If you're in 9th or 10th grade, bring a salty snack to share.
If you're in 11th or 12th grade, bring a dessert to share.

If you have other obligations Friday night, you can come late to the lock-in! If you have something happening Saturday, come to the lock-in and leave early! All I ask is that you be settled (either at the lock-in or at home) by midnight.

Other events:
Shag Party! Join Hibben members on Saturday night, April 9 from 6:30 - 8:30 for a Shag Party in the CLLC. There will be shag lessons, snacks, and FUN! This is a great event for the whole family.

UMYF SUNDAY (4/3)! We're taking the show on the road to visit some Hibben members. We'll meet in the CLLC at 4:00 sharp, do some visiting (and lend a helping hand with projects like light bulb changing, clock setting, and yard work), and return to the CLLC for dinner at 6pm. We'll be finished at 7pm. This promises to be a special outing...bring your smile and a rake!

Lock-in 2011! The date has been set: Friday, April 8 at 6:00pm. All 7th - 12th graders should plan to attend this night of games, food, fun, and NO SLEEP, which will end at 7am on Saturday. Invite your friends and mark your calendar. Please plan to bring the following supplies:

UMYF This Sunday (3/27)! Your crime scene outline of Jesus has gotten some looks this week. People are loving your 24-hours mural! This Sunday, we'll be working on the 3rd significant event in Jesus's last 24-hours on earth: his trial before the high priest. There's so much going on in UMYF-land! From summer plans to fundraising to new Sunday School studies...the calendar is full and FUN! Read below for details:

UMYF this Sunday (3/6): It's cookie baking with a twist! As we've done several times in the past, we'll be baking cookies to support the Hibben members who participate in Kairos Prison Ministry. NEW will be the chance for you to write a letter to an inmate who will be touched by this amazing ministry. Have you ever encouraged a prisoner? Here's your chance! ALSO, I'd love to set up several video gaming systems in the gym for those who aren't bakers. If you'd like to bring your console and APPROPRIATE games (no violence, pretty please!) please do! 6-8pm in the CLLC.

Summer Trips: The March 1 deadline for registering for summer trips came and went, and we still have lots of spaces left for each trip. We must have 2 more folks sign-up for White Water Rafting in order to take that trip (May 27 - 30). Please, please, please check your calendars if you plan to attend any of the trips. It's important to know who's planning to attend so I can coordinate adult chaperons, lodging, and transportation. Click here for info on the opportunities.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner: On Tuesday evening, March 8 (next week!), the youth will be hosting our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner for the congregation. This event will be used to raise money to support the Belize mission trip this summer.

I NEED HELP! Please e-mail me if you're able to help during one of the shifts below. Dinner will be served at 6:00pm. I especially need help during the later shift!

5:00 - 6:30: Food Preparation and set-up (pancakes, sausage, grits)

Hibben Talent Show: There's still time to sign-up to perform an act in the church-wide talent show on Saturday, March 12. This event benefits the Mallard-Sweat Scholarship Fund, which in turn benefits many of our high school seniors. You are all so talented...make plans to join in the fun!

Don't miss Sunday School! Last week, both Jr. and Sr. High classes started new Sunday School studies. Jr. Highers are in the midst of a 4-week study about how to handle CONFLICT and the Sr. Highers are learning kung-fu mind tricks to play on their parents during a study called Teens vs. Parents. Scott and Karen Butler are leading this study. Make plans to jump in! Sunday School starts at 9:15am.

Summer Trips! - Including Whitewater Rafting!

If you weren't able to attend last week's Summer Preview Meeting during UMYF, see below for details on our summer trip schedule. Please note that all deposits are due by March 1, and that no spaces can be held without a deposit.

Whitewater Rafting: May 27 - May 30 (Memorial Day weekend); ages 12 and older; $215 per person. This is the ultimate summer kick-off! We'll leave Hibben on Friday after school and head to Lake Junaluska, where we'll be staying during our trip. Two days of rafting on the Nantahala and Pigeon Rivers, 3-nights accommodation, 7 meals, and transportation are included in the trip cost. A $75 deposit is due by March 1. 10 or more people must sign-up in order to make this trip possible.

Salkehatchie: For all youth ages 14 and older. We'll be sending groups to three camps this summer: June 11 - 18 in Spartanburg; July 9 - 16 in Lexington; and July 23 - 30 (location TBD). Cost per person is $225 and includes registration fee, gas, and meals. If you would like to go to Salkehatchie during a different week, please visit www.salkehatchie.org for a full list of camps offered. A deposit of $115 is due by March 1.

Wilderness Trail: July 28 - August 4. This hiking and backpacking ministry is open to those 12 years and older. You will be backpacking, carrying everything you need in a pack. We'll set up a different camp each night and then hiking to a new camp each day. No previous backpacking experience is required for this trip! Visit www.wtrail.com for more information. Cost per person is $270; a $135 deposit is due by March 1.

Epworth by the Sea: June 22 - 27; 6th - 8th graders; $350 per person. Mission outreach during this amazing week includes oyster bed renourishment, light construction, painting, visits to nursing homes, serving meals to those in need, etc. A $50 deposit is due by March 1.

Greetings from the lodge at Winterplace! Day 2 of the trip marked the kick-off of a ski fest that will last until Sunday night. On Friday, we enjoyed day of great weather and light crowds, which was great for our first time skiers.

Sojo and Adelaide learned to ski thanks to Carlsen's Ski School:

At last report, they graduated from Bunny Slope to Green Slopes and are now tackling their first blue runs, proving that Carlsen's instruction is worth every penny (and would be even if it weren't free!).

We enjoyed some lunch in the lodge before hitting the slopes in the afternoon:

Ski Trip, Day 1!

We had a picture perfect start to the 2011 Ski Trip...great travel weather, an incredible group, and clear roads. We made it to Winterplace, WV at around 4pm, checked into our lovely accommodations at Glade Springs, then headed to get our ski rental equipment. Some highlights from the day:

We helped Adelaide start the celebration of her 14th birthday with the HONK! game. Every time a fellow motorist honked, Adelaide got to open a birthday present! It was a really fun game thanks to some honk-happy drivers.

Bus to BarlowGirl: The Hibben bus will be departing from the front parking lot at 5:15 SHARP on Saturday to go to the concert. If you're interested in hitching a ride, please let me know and I'll reserve a space for you. We'll return around 10:15pm.

Operation Christmas Child: Collection week is happening now, and we have the chance to pitch in with loading the truck with boxes. If you need service hours, or are just a kind-hearted kind of person, please volunteer to help for a few hours. Volunteers are needed on Saturday (11/20), 10am - 3pm and on Sunday (11/21), 12 noon - 6pm. If you are able to help, please let me know. Your friends and family members can come, too!

UMYF this Sunday (11/21): With a new, non-traditional worship service in the works at Hibben, we're helping out by lending our ideas! To help spark our brainstorm, we'll visit the contemporary service at John Wesley UMC in West Ashley on Sunday evening. Please meet in Hibben's front lot at 5:15pm and bring money for dinner. We'll return at 8pm.

The Ultimate Challenge

That's right. We, the youth group, have been issued a challenge by the Belize mission team. It's quite simple, really. All you have to do is agree to come to an amazing, fun, loud, energetic, inspiring, dancing-singing-clapping-yelling, unbelievable BarlowGirl concert on November 20. Did I mention amazing?

As a fundraiser for the mission trip next summer, the Belize team has organized a concert with BarlowGirl, and they NEED you to attend. The details:

Date: Saturday, November 20
Time: 5:45pm (show starts at 6:30)
Location: Northwood Baptist Church
Cost: ONLY $10. Can you believe that?

We've been challenged to buy and/or sell 50 tickets to the event. It's a family affair, so start with your own household. Your parents, siblings, neighbors, friends - invite them to buy a ticket and help us reach our goal of 50 tickets.

But I'm here to sweeten the deal. Selling 50 tickets will earn you more than an amazing concert. WHEN we reach our goal, you'll also earn a LOCK-IN in DECEMBER! Let's celebrate Christmas break in a major way with a lock-in Christmas party!

Youth Sunday: It’s FINALLY here! This Sunday (10/17) is Youth Sunday at Hibben. The plans have been made, and I believe you guys are going to be a total blessing to the congregation. Please remember that we will be meeting in the choir room at 7:45am on Sunday. Pretty please be on time. After the 8:15 service, we will be treated to a homemade pancake breakfast, thanks to Carlen and Kathy Huey!

UMYF Sunday: It's week 5 of The Experiment and we'll be talking about living a Christian life. Plus, we'll play armless charades and learn about The Big Three. Join us from 6 - 8pm in the CLLC.

Fall Festival: One of Hibben’s biggest events, the Fall Festival, is happening on Saturday, October 23. Volunteers are needed! It’s a great chance for you to lend a helping hand and meet other Hibben members. Check your schedules and be ready to sign up for a shift at youth on Sunday night.

Christmas Handbells: There’s a very special plan in the works for the Family Christmas Eve service on December 24. If you’re in town and would like to participate by playing handbells, please let me know ASAP. Four practice sessions will begin on Sunday afternoon, November 28. Sign-up today!

What a great kick-off to THE EXPERIMENT last week! 21 of you embarked on a 30-day journey to put your faith in action and answer the question "What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?"

If you weren't able to be there last week, IT'S NOT TOO LATE! You can still join in on The Experiment by coming to UMYF this Sunday from 6-8pm in the CLLC.

In other news...

Youth Sunday Planning will continue in the Youth Room starting at 9:15am on Sunday (9/19). Bring your craziest, wildest ideas about a theme for the service, which will be on October 17. No idea is too off-the-wall or too small. This service should be a reflection of the creativity, spunk, and energy that you all possess!

Volunteers Needed! I need your help this Sunday (9/19) at 5:00pm in the kitchen in the CLLC. We'll be making sandwiches for hungry Citadel cadets and I can't do it alone! No need to bring anything - just your able hands (which you will have to wash before helping).

UMYF Sunday (9/19): It's Week 2 of THE EXPERIMENT and we'll be talking about fears. Everybody's got 'em! If you were around for Week 1, bring your student journal. If not, we'll give you one this week. Also, if you're able, please bring a $5 donation to cover the cost of your journal.

The Highlight of My Week: While cleaning out some boxes in my office this week, I found a piece of very realistic looking fake bacon. Come to youth on Sunday to find out how we're going to use it!

Tons and tons of news to share with you this week! First, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came to Open House last Sunday evening. More than 65 of you showed up, shared a great meal, and got all the inside scoop on plans for Youth Ministry this Fall. It is so amazing to see such supportive parents and family members...a great way to start off the Fall season, for sure!

MISSION SUNDAY: At both the 8:15 and 10:30 services this Sunday (8/29), we'll be celebrating all the mission work that was completed by Hibben members this summer. Many of you were involved in various mission trip (VBS, Belize, St. Simons, Salkehatchie, etc!). If your mission had a t-shirt, please wear it to church on Sunday so you can be recognized for your efforts. I'm so proud of each of you!

Lots of news and one "you-better-mark-your-calendar-now-for-this-awesome-event" announcement:

UMYF Sunday: Life is total chaos sometimes, right? So why should UMYF be any different! Come this Sunday (8/1) for SCRAMBLE NIGHT - when all our normal meeting activities are jumbled up and YOU get to decide the order. Closing prayer first? Why not! Blessing after dinner? Sure! (We'll also talk about making order out of the chaos!). 6-8 in the CLLC!

Atlanta Road Trip: Sunday is the final day to sign up for our big trip to Atlanta. We'll leave on Friday morning, August 6, see a Braves game that night, go to Six Flags all day Saturday and return home on Sunday after church. Cost is $100 per person and includes transportation, 2 nights hotel room, tickets to the game and park, and breakfast both mornings. Please bring extra money for meals and spending money (if desired). To sign up, call Elizabeth (813-8700).

Prayers for Casey McCurley: As many of you know, Casey was involved in a skateboarding accident on Monday evening. He is recovering at home but could use our prayers! Please pray for his speedy recovery and for his family as they care for him. We love you, Casey!

Boat Day 2010! Back by popular demand, BOAT DAY will be Sunday, August 15 from 1:30 - 5:30pm. This fun day on Beresford Creek is a great way to end the summer and greet the school year. Beach Sweep 2010 happened last Sunday evening, and though grey skies threatened overhead, we pressed on and pitched in to help keep the beaches clean! After gathering about 3 bags of trash, we got in some good "frolic" time and tried our best to dig up this old tire:

Beach Sweep this Sunday! We'll depart from the CLLC at 5PM SHARP this Sunday (6/27) for our annual beach sweep at the Isle of Palms. It's a great way to get some fresh air as we continue to be good stewards of God's beautiful creation! Trash bags and gloves will be provided, and we'll return to the church at 8pm. Please bring a 20 oz. drink for yourself to go with our picnic dinner.

Hello everyone! What a busy summer it's been! In addition to all the fun that's been going on, the youth of Hibben have been hard at work in SERVICE this summer. I'm so proud of all the good that you're all doing.

A special shout-out to Emily Nyers, Becky Thompson, Harriet Boatright, and David Lupo, who returned from an amazing week at J.E.T. Salkehatchie. AND Grace Fennell, Jesse Meelan, Davis Bare, Noah Thesing, Gabe Thesing, and Jacob Hand who did incredible things in Belize.

Next up, another round of Salkehatchie and a Jr. High mission trip to St. Simons Island. Please make plans to attend this Sunday's 10:30 service to see the commissioning of these groups.

What: Rising 7th and 8th graders, please bring 2, 2 liters of soda. Everyone else, please bring a snack to share!

Other important info: If you're not able to stay all night, come anyway! You can come late or leave early, but be prepared to stay put at midnight. I suggest you pack a pillow and sleeping bag (no sleeping required), a change of comfy clothes, and any (appropriate) games, (APPROPRIATE) movies, or sporting equipment you'd like. Dinner will be served and we'll have plenty of snacks and breakfast.

Upcoming UMYF Schedule: We will not have UMYF on Sunday night (May 23) to allow everyone a chance to recover from the lock-in. Also, we will not meet on Sunday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. We'll resume normal schedule on June 6.

UMYF this Sunday (4/9): After wishing your mom a HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY (don't forget!), head to church for a fun evening outside. We'll leave the CLLC at 6pm SHARP and head to Mt. Pleasant's Waterfront Park for a picnic dinner and fun. Bring a football, frisbee, kite, etc. We'll return to the church at 8pm.

It's (almost) Lock-in Time! The fun starts at 6:30pm Friday, May 21 and lasts until 7am on Saturday. Mark your calendar for a full night of food, movies, arts and crafts, laser tag, fooze ball, air hockey, ping pong, basketball, and more and more and more! Don't miss it!

And maybe, in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of life, God gets a little lost?

And instead of letting him rule your life, you accidently reduce God to the size of a needle.

Before you know it, you find yourself searching and searching...

...looking high and low...

...scratching your head, wondering where God is?

I have a feeling these folks can relate.

But take heart! Don't lose hope. Don't get discouraged.

Instead, keep searching! The Bible tells us that we will find God when we earnestly seek Him.

"Come near to God and he will come near to you." - James 4:8

"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." - Jeremiah 29:13

"But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul." - Deuteronomy 4:29

Sunday, March 28
11th and 12th Graders! From 5 - 6pm in the youth room, we'll be hosting several college students from the Charleston area to talk to YOU about the importance of "keeping the faith" in college...the challenges, benefits, risk and rewards of getting involved in Wesley or a similar ministry when you're out on your own. Invite your friends (11th and 12th graders only!) and join in this casual Q & A session.

UMYF Sunday: I hope you received the Multiplying Ministries Financial Tracking sheet I sent earlier this week...the challenge is for you to keep track of the money you spend and where that money comes from. Start tracking today and bring your sheet with you on Sunday. We'll also play games and make a VERY EXCITING announcement about an upcoming event. See you in the CLLC from 6 - 8!

Where Are You?

Last Sunday at UMYF, we read Genesis 3:9 and talked about being where God needs us to be. The theme of the night was "Where Are You":

To drive the point home, we played a land version of "Marco Polo" and then moved on to two games of Hide-and-Seek. I can assure you the "seekers" didn't peek:

Though I'm STILL not sure where Jared and Cam hid during the second game, I am sure that we had fun!

Nothing But Nets Recap

A huge thank you to everyone who helped with Nothing But Nets last week. If you played on a team, invited your friends to form a team, kept score, ran the clock, sold concessions, helped set-up or clean-up, made a donation, or were there to cheer on the teams, you helped make this event a smashing success.

We raised over $1,200 to be used to purchase mosquito nets to prevent malaria in 3rd world countries...a new record for Hibben's Nothing But Nets event!

A special thank-you is due to Mike and Andrew Roberts. Thanks, guys, for your tireless efforts and for everything you did to help make this event possible.

I hope you've made plans to participate in Nothing But Nets this Sunday! If you're not on a team, you can still pitch in by volunteering to sell concessions, keep score, play games with the youngsters, and cheer on the teams! Hamburgers and Hot Dogs for Haiti! The Jr High Sunday School Class will sponsor "Hamburgers and Hot Dogs for Haiti" this Sunday, February 28 after the 10:30 service in the CLLC. All donations will go to benefit UMCOR for Haiti Relief. We will have hamburgers, hot dogs, fixins, chips and drinks. We will also show the movie "A Bug's Life" beginning at 12:15. We made it home safely from the ski trip! Hope all of you who were able to go had fun and all who didn't make it this year enjoyed a long holiday weekend. If nothing else, at least we all got to play in the snow! Check out the photos below from the trip. Enjoy!

UMYF this Sunday: It's all about Salkehatchie! UMYF members, their parents and siblings are all invited from 6 - 7:30 pm in the CLLC as we talk about Salkehatchie 2010. Please bring your summer calendars for planning purposes AND a side dish to share with the group. If you've been to Salkehatchie before, come ready to share your experiences, and if you've haven't, I hope you'll consider going in 2010.

Who Likes Pie?!?!...apparently, I DO! Bring a covered dish and make plans to come to the Chili Cook-off after church this Sunday (2/21). Not only will you enjoy some great food, you'll also have the chance to smash a pie in my face. Yes, you read that correctly...a pie in my face. Rev. Jim and I will each have a jar and you vote with your money. Whoever has the most money at the end of voting will get a pie in the face. All money raised will go toward the Mallard-Sweat Scholarship. Honestly, I'm not really that scared....

Save the Date! Our annual Nothing But Nets basketball tournament will be held on Sunday, March 14. Start gathering your teams to help raise money to send mosquito nets to 3rd world countries to prevent malaria. Stay tuned for more details soon!

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers for our journey from Charleston to Winterplace, WV on Friday. We saw our fair share of snow and ice on the way and felt every single one of your prayers for our safety! After we got north of Charlotte, the weather and road conditions improved greatly and it was smooth sailing all the way to our destination. Here are some photos from the trip and from Day 1 of skiing and fun!

Souper Bowl and Super Bowl!

It's almost Super Bowl Weekend! Check out these happenings:

Souper Bowl of Caring: This Sunday is the annual Souper Bowl of Caring - an opportunity for you to participate in a national movement that encourages everyone to give $1 as they leave church on Super Bowl Sunday to be donated to a local service organization. We'll be collecting donations after the 8:15 and 10:30 services, and all money will be given to East Cooper Community Outreach. I need volunteers! Could you please e-mail me at eskogman@hibbenumc.org and sign up to collect money at either the 9:00 shift or the 11:30 shift? It's an easy job - just stand at the door with a collection pot and smile! Let me know if you can help!

Super Bowl Party: 4:30pm, Sunday, in the CLLC. DON'T MISS IT! We'll host youth groups from other churches in the Charleston area for a night of fun, food and football. Please plan to bring a snack or appetizer to share with the group and get ready for a great night! We'll play games, eat, and watch the Super Bowl until halftime. Join us!

Whew! What an amazing, blessed, laughter-and-learning filled January we've had! We've talked about New Year's resolutions, our fears, we've been bowling, and we went to the most amazing youth conference ever - Revolution - in Columbia. I hope you were able to be apart of some (or all) of these happenings. What a great way to start off 2010!

The momentum and energy continue over the next several weeks, so take a look at all the happenings below and jump in!

Pancake Breakfast: This Sunday (1/31), the youth are hosting a second Pancake Breakfast in order to help raise funds for the Belize Mission Trip. The breakfast starts at 7:30am in the CLLC and will be one of the many events happening during the Ministry Fair. Below, you'll find a list of people who have signed up to help with the breakfast. If you haven't signed up, please come help anyway! We're going to need all hands on deck!

Serving from the Heart Ministry Fair: During Sunday School hour this Sunday (1/31), Hibben is having it's first ever Ministry Fair. Youth Ministries (that us!) will have a fun, interactive table aimed at telling the church about all the wonderful things we do. Our goal is to educate the congregation as well as recruit adult volunteers to help with Sunday School, UMYF, chaperoning special events, prayer team, etc. We'll need a steady rotation of youth representation at the table for our "UMYF Shoot-out" air hockey game, so come prepared to meet and greet other church members!

COOKIES! We've been asked by the Wesley Foundation (college ministry) to bake cookies for an upcoming luncheon. If you'd like to help, I'd love for you to meet me in the CLLC on Sunday (1/31) at 5pm, ready to bake! I'll have all the supplies we need.

UMYF this Sunday: The previously scheduled flag football game has been put on hold and instead, we'll be having UMYF from 6 - 8pm in the CLLC. Come join us for a fun night of dinner, games, and fun. I'm looking forward to seeing you all!

Super Bowl Party: Invite your friends and get ready for some FOOTBALL! We're proud to be hosting this Charleston District-wide Youth event, and I want a big representation of Hibben Youth! So mark your calendars for 4:30pm on Sunday, February 7. More details to follow...I'm sure I'll need some hands to help with set-up!

Revolution: Only 4 spots remain for Revolution in Columbia, January 22 - 24. Join in the fun of this weekend of music, speakers, and life-changing inspiration. NEW DEVELOPMENT: We'll be traveling and rooming with the youth group from Isle of Palms UMC. The cost per person is $60 and includes event tickets, 2 nights in a hotel, transportation, 2 breakfasts. Operation Christmas Child Update: I wanted to pass along some powerful news from Pam Thesing. The Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes that we put together in November have made their way to their excited recipients. Each box had a bar code so we'd know where it ended up. So far, children in the following countries have received our boxes:

Central Asia
Zimbabwe
Central African Republic

Isn't it cool to see how our work here in Mt. Pleasant is positively impacting people all over the world?!?! You guys are amazing!

365 Days of Courage

Last Sunday, we talked about having COURAGE! Did you know the Bible instructs us to "Fear Not" exactly 365 times? If you're keeping track, that's one for every day of the year. Coincidence? I don't think so!

We started off the night by writing our fears on index cards, then hanging them on the wall. Some of the fears were funny (clowns, spiders, Mr. Yaeger...) while others were very serious (letting my parents down, being rejected, not being good enough).

Next, we assembled and decorated "Fear Not" calendars. I hope you'll use the calendar as a daily reminder that God gives us a spirit of confidence that we are His children and are in His care.

UMYF Sunday: Join us from 6 - 8pm in the CLLC and join in the discussion about Fear vs. Courage. It's so easy to get bogged down in fear, anxiety, and doubt. But what does the Bible say about how we should handle these distractions? We'll explore the meaning of God given courage and each person will leave with a year-long reminder that we are called to live a life of courage.

Revolution! January 22 - 24, Columbia, SC: We'll leave Hibben at 4:30pm on Friday (1/22) and head to Columbia for an amazing and inspiring weekend with other youth groups from across the state. 7th - 12th graders - are you sick of not being taken seriously because "you're young"? What would happen if you all banded together to start a revolution...in your homes, your schools, and your communities? This inspirational and motivating weekend is sure to give you confidence and rejuvenation in your faith.

Consider it a weekend-long lock-in. With late night sessions, plenty of new friends, and lots to do and see, this is sure to be a weekend you'll never forget. Cost per person in $60 and includes event admission, 2 night hotel stay (at the Hampton Inn), 2 breakfasts, and transportation. You'll need additional money for 2 lunches and 2 dinners. "Letter to Yourself" Recap

If you were at MYF last Sunday, you'll be receiving a (not so mysterious) letter in the mail in June. The letter will be the one you wrote on January 3...to yourself! We spent some time reflecting on our current spiritual state and made goals about where we'd like to improve our walk with Christ over the next year. More prayer? More consistent quite time? More confidence in telling others of your faith? Each person wrote a letter to themselves that I'll mail in June...just in time to give you a second wind to keep those most important "New Year's Resolutions."

Thanks to all of you for the special gift that was presented to me at MYF on Sunday Night. The donkey given in my name through World Vision to a family in need is humbling and so special. Through this true spirit of giving and generosity, you've shown God's love and compassion - not just to the family who will be helped by this gift - but also to me.

I pray each of you have a meaningful Christmas, spending time with family and friends, rejoicing for the many blessings we all enjoy, and reflecting on the magnificent gift of Jesus Christ.

The ever popular and much-anticipated "Bologna Snowflake" game was a hit - especially for those who managed not to be grossed out by the bologna. Katie Wamsley took home first prize with her tribute to the Jersey Shore. Don't ask...

This weekend gives us two great opportunities to share Christmas!

Saturday, December 19: We've been invited to join the Revelation Sunday School class's annual Christmas Caroling outing! Imagine the joy that we'll bring to Hibben's elderly shut-in members who might otherwise spend the holidays feeling forgotten and alone. Even if you don't consider yourself an expert singer, this event is about much more than songs! We'll meet in the front parking lot at 1:30 on Saturday and will finish around 4:00. Make it a family affair - all youth and their families are invited.

Sunday, December 20 UMYF: We'll share Christmas with one another from 6 - 8pm in the CLLC at our CHRISTMAS PARTY! If you've never made a bologna snowflake, you simply must attend. We'll have food, tons of games with prizes, and prepare ourselves to celebrate Christ's birth.

Please note: We will not have UMYF on Sunday night, December 27. Normal activities will resume on January 3.

Revolution 2010: It's the first big event of 2010 and you won't want to miss it! We're headed to Columbia, January 22 - 24 to attend the state-wide UMYF conference. Charge your batteries for the year ahead, connect with old friends (from Salkehatchie!), and meet new ones at this amazing weekend of music, speakers, and off-the-wall activities.
